about

Amy Alvey and Mark Kilianski (of Golden Shoals) and Brian Slattery ran into each other several years ago on the festival circuit and immediately hit it off musically and personally. Interesting problem was, every time they sat down together to play Appalachian fiddle tunes, they ended up ... going other places with it. Inspired by originally-from-Kentucky banjoist Ephraim McDowell's description of old-time music as "hillbilly free jazz," Slattery suggested that maybe they just get together and turn some microphones on. So that's what they did. This was recorded in one morning with a couple takes for each. They picked the takes for each that seemed freshest and loosest.

"Sally Goodin," "Milwaukee Blues," and "Elk River Blues" are traditional tunes. "Cage Match With Elvis" is a free improv; the title refers to a confrontation between Kilianski and one of Slattery's chickens that occurred shortly after recording.
